“Chlorine-Free” doesn't always mean what you think it means

Every parent wants clean, safe diapers for their baby's skin, but when brands say “chlorine-free,” they aren't all talking about the same thing.

THE GOLD STANDARD

TCF

Coterie uses Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) pulp. This means that the plant-based pulp in our diapers’ absorbent core is not bleached with chlorine, a potential skin and respiratory irritant.

THE STANDARD CHOICE

ECF

Many diaper brands use Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) pulp. While it means elemental chlorine isn’t used, the pulp is bleached with chlorine dioxide, a chlorine derivative.

Many brands have changed to ECF because it’s often more affordable, but haven’t always clearly communicated this to their customers.

As a pediatrician, when I think about products that sit on a baby’s skin all day, I focus on reducing unnecessary exposures. Total Chlorine Free pulp in diapers minimizes exposure to dioxins, which are byproducts of chlorine processing and can be irritating. For skin that’s still developing, material choices like this can make a difference.

Why Coterie

Our diapers use only TCF pulp in our absorbent core

Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) pulp means no chlorine or chlorine compounds are used in the bleaching process, eliminating the risk of dioxin residues that can irritate sensitive skin.

Designed for sensitive skin from day one

All materials that may come in contact with your baby’s skin undergo clinical testing for allergenicity and sensitization, and are proven hypoallergenic.

The Diaper is also EWG-certified

EWG Verified badge

Our diaper has earned EWG verification, meaning it meets some of the strictest standards for ingredient transparency and safety in personal care products.

This wasn’t a trend or marketing decision. Every material in our diaper is carefully considered.

From the plant-based pulp in our core to the soft nonwoven top sheet, every layer is chosen with your baby’s comfort and safety in mind.
